'Dia De Los Muertos' - Day of the Dead Project
In this unit pupils will begin to develop knowledge and understanding of Mexican culture through the study of the festival--Day of the Dead—El Dias De Los Muertos. Pupils will experiment with concepts of colour, pattern, adornment and decoration and then design and make a ceramic skull based candle holder. New ceramic sculpture and construction techniques will be introduced that build upon prior knowledge and skills gained from previous units in year 7. Thus ensuring all pupils are able to competently complete the craft to their intentions and to a high quality.
The project aims for all pupils to have created an outstanding high standard ceramic piece which incorporates new construction techniques and clearly demonstrates an understanding of the Mexican styling. Colour theory will have been used in a way to emphasis the adornment and decoration. Accurate Paper Picado’s will show understanding of symmetry and pattern.

Henri Rousseau Jungle Paintings
In this unit pupils will develop their painting skills in particular, application and consistency as well as the ability to mix tones and shades building upon existing skills gained in year 7. Pupils will create jungle scenes from a combination of imagination and observation . Drawings of leaves from direct observation and study of the work of Henri Rousseau will be used to inform pupils when they create imaginative compositions. Pupils can use this as an opportunity to demonstrate understanding of picture space and pattern both regular and irregular as well as scale perspective. After revisiting knowledge of colour theory pupils will begin to paint the pictures concentrating on creating depth through their use of tonal perspective and a focal point of a complimentary opposite colour.
The aim of this project is that all pupils will have created an outstanding painting with high quality realistic drawings. It will demonstrate clear scale and tonal perspective as well as an influence of Henri Rousseau. They will also complete the extension task of a book cover with an extended piece of creative writing.

They will use scale perspective, repeating and overlapping to create underwater compositions. Cross curricular research will be carried out into underwater organisms from salt water rock pools and fresh water ponds. Pupils will be made aware of the assessment criteria. Possible compositions will be explored in sketchbooks and assessment and evaluation will take place before creating final designs. As an extention pupils can develop a more abstract piece in contrast to the realistic work influenced by the artist Paul Klee.
